This painting was inspired by the medieval allegory 'Psychomachia' by the Latin poet Prudentius. The poem describes the conflict of the vices and virtues in a battle to control the soul. John Afflick has encorporated the ancient game of snakes and ladders, which was itself originally created as a game to illustrate this moral conflict, around a central image that represents the virtue of 'Industria'.
