This preliminary study, executed in rich gouache on paper, serves as the foundational design for An Allegory of the Soul: The Awakening, the second major work in my new series.

In this composition, the human soul is personified as a beautiful, red-haired woman journeying through a barren, desolate desert littered with animal carcasses and weathered skulls—a stark representation of mortality and the desolate nature of the material world. Bound by the constraints of physical existence, she carries a heavy, crushing yoke of stones, a visceral symbol of the dense weight of the Earth's gravity and earthly attachments.

The focal point of the narrative shifts at her crown, where two powerful symbolic eagles descend to lift a heavy blindfold from her eyes, dramatically illustrating the exact moment of her spiritual awakening. Above this scene of liberation, a brilliant golden sun bathes the composition in a divine, celestial light. Circling the figure, an elegant inscription grounds the painting's theological depth, quoting Ephesians 5:14: "Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine upon you."

This study offers an intimate glimpse into my  creative process, and captures a raw emotional tension between the decay of the physical realm and the luminous dawn of spiritual resurrection.
