This work was inspired by the 1896 oil painting by the British Neoclassical artist John Wiliam Godward. It is a portrait of 'Campaspe', one of Alexander the Great's concubines. According to tradition, Apelles, a renowned painter of ancient Greece, fell in love with Campaspe while painting her portrait, and as a mark of appreciation for the great masters work, Alexander gifted Campaspe to him. In this version however, the historical narrative has been given a humorous twist, Alexander has obviously disposed of Campaspe because of her infidelity and judging by the artists hand prints over her breast, Apelles obvious infatuation for her.
