'The Allegory Of The Soul' is a tender representation of a slightly melancholic angel sat in a grotto. Although she appears under no distress we see on closer inspection that she is indeed heavily chained to the interior. The emphasis placed on her large outstretched wings suggests that she should not be restricted to the confines of the cave but  designed to soar the vast expanse of sky behind.
The artist seems to be suggesting that the human soul yearns to occupy a distant realm but that it willingly consents to the confines of the human body to fulfil its purpose on its earthly journey.
